This is a real review about a real experience we had at The Galloway School. It's rumored that a lot of the good reviews being left are done by the administration, which, for the record changes more often than I change clothes, a HUGE red flag at ANY place. Please think long and hard before sending your child off to this judgmental, strange, pressure cooker of a "school". Under the guise of being "liberal" which I am all for being open minded, the teachers in Upper Learning at Galloway do a TERRIBLE job of nurturing and welcoming differences in learning capabilities. I have never witnessed children being so degraded and so talked down to before in my life. Gordon Mathis (whom I proudly told off) has absolutely no business in academics in any capacity. He is dismissive and very conditional. After only 1 quarter of grades needing improvement his answer is to humiliate in public and suggest Galloway may not be the school for us. This is what you call helpful and accepting? For a child who is dutifully at school everyday and trying their best, staying up until 11PM with the mountains of homework after coming home in tears? Who excelled in their previous school with no shortage of friends and sports? These are children, but I'm here to warn you they are not treated like it. Adults in the fast food workplace get more respect than these excuses for teachers give these kids. Mark McCandless caters to only a handful with his limited, linear understanding of what kids need to know about science. He has a very biased approach to what should even be taught and even in a college setting I doubt he would be well received. To ask him questions will get you a look that seems to ask back, "just how stupid are you?" Parents after a conference with this guy walk away shaking their heads wondering what has even been said. There could not be more ambiguity in the teaching methods if they tried and I use the term teaching methods loosely. I don't believe some of the teachers at Galloway even know their subject matter and what's the best defense? A good offense. So make it the child's fault, and oh, that will be another few thousand in tutoring costs because not only can we not teach, we will make sure we are too intimidating and unapproachable to be bothered with questions or after class help. There have also been a few kids that have committed suicide while at Galloway and while this could happen anywhere this whole place has a very dark feeling. The teachers appear to be miserable, and are using their power on kids. Weak. Glad we left. We are much happier at another school and are actually getting our over $20,000.00 worth.

  • Galloway is an awesome place! The teachers truly care about each and every student. They also welcome the involvement of parents at many different levels from helping out in the classroom to Board activities. The community is tight knit and it can be a bit hard to "break in" if you join it in your child's later years, but it's not impossible by any means. The administration is top notch, listening to our concerns and addressing them. They excel at creating win-win situations which is refreshing in our win-lose culture. Example... Recently the school went through a schedule change. After the new schedule was implemented, they took student feedback (at least in the Upper Learning/High School) and adjusted again to accommodate that feedback. This is just one example of their flexibility and student-centered culture. Is it the school for everyone, no; is it the school for us, yes!
